The Congos are a legendary Jamaican reggae vocal group formed in the mid-1970s, renowned for their rich harmonies and spiritual roots reggae sound. The original lineup consisted of Cedric Myton, Roy “Ashanti” Johnson, and Watty Burnett, with later additions like Kenroy Fyffe. Their seminal 1977 album, Heart of the Congos, produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry at Black Ark Studio, is a cornerstone of reggae music, blending soulful vocals with Rastafarian themes and Perry’s innovative production. Tracks like “Fisherman” and “Congoman” remain iconic. Despite challenges, including limited initial commercial success, the album gained cult status and critical acclaim over time. The Congos continued to perform and record, releasing albums like Congo Ashanti(1979) and Back in the Black Ark (2009), maintaining their influence in reggae with a focus on unity, spirituality, and cultural roots.
