Culture remain one of the defining vocal groups of the golden age. Their 1977 album Two Sevens Clash is a landmark of conscious reggae — later cited by Rolling Stone among the fifty coolest records of all time. After the death of founder and lead singer Joseph Hill in 2006, his son Kenyatta Hill stepped forward and has carried the catalogue and the message ever since: Two Sevens Clash, International Herb, Zion Gate, and the rest of that enduring songbook, delivered with the same spiritual force.
Joining them is Cedric Myton, founding voice of The Congos. His 1977 masterpiece Heart of the Congos, produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry at the Black Ark, is widely regarded as one of the greatest roots albums ever made. Myton’s unmistakable falsetto — heard on Fisherman, Congoman and Open Up the Gate — remains one of reggae’s most distinctive sounds.
